CHARACTER NAME: Mary Winchester FANDOM: Supernatural AGE: 28 ALIGNMENT (GOOD, EVIL, NEUTRAL): Good BRIEF BACKGROUND SUMMARY: Mary Campbell was born into a life that most children would thankfully never know. Samuel and Deanna Campbell were hunters. Mary grew up knowing what it was to fear true evil. Although her parents had taught her well and she could hold her own against a good many hellish things, Mary did not like the danger of her life. She worried about her father whenever he was on a hunt without her, she had nightmares at night that she would make some stupid mistake when they were on a hunt together and he would get himself killed. Part of Mary hoped that if she could just escape the dangerous life that she was living, that her dad would realize that there were more important things in life than finding the next 'hunt.'
And then she met John Winchester. He was everything that a hunter wasn't, and just the sort of man that Mary Winchester was looking for. He was handsome, with a tour in the Marines to attest to his bravery. He was sweet and caring and smart...and though Samuel didn't think much of John and his family for being mechanics, Mary loved her future husband's career. It was so very normal that it made her giddy. She didn't want some know it all who would look down on Mary for having an odd charm bracelet, or an idiot who she couldn't trust. She wanted the man in the middle who was real and stable and strong.
The plan had always been to leave her old life of hunting behind, but with John in the picture she was running TO someone instead of away from everything, and she liked that—the idea of building a new home, a new family. A normal one. She never told John what she was running from, she let him believe that she wanted to get away from her overbearing father, but she made him promise to take her away.
That plan was somewhat derailed when she met the Yellow Eyed Demon. He said that he liked her, that she had spunk, and something about his words terrified her. She ran to John that night, insisting that he take her away that very night.
John drove them to a romantic spot by the river, and started to propose, an event Mary had been looking forward to since she noticed the signs a few days before, but Samuel Campbell knocked on the door. The explosion that Mary feared was clearly there, but it was not a father's anger that was lashing at the couple, but a demon's. Within seconds John's neck was snapped and Mary was faced with an unimaginable choice.
Without knowing the full details of what she was agreeing to, Mary took the deal. She was alone, with her parents dead, the man she loved dead, and she couldn't imagine going on that way. It sounded like such a simple price to pay, to allow a demon entry into her house once in ten years. Ten years sounded like such a long time—after all, at that point it was slightly more than half of Mary's entire life—she wanted to imagine that in ten years she would have found a way out of the deal, or that the demon's intentions would be quite benign for that night. Even had he asked for her own soul Mary would likely have accepted, because she couldn't imagine life without John. He was her hope for a good, normal life.
It was a little hard to find an excuse to explain the deaths of Samuel and Deanna, but somehow things fell into place. She and John were married and on January 24, 1979 they welcomed their first son, Dean. Mary delighted in her role as a mother, documenting every little milestone of Dean's in one of her many diaries. She wanted to remember everything about her children, especially their earliest years.
On May 2, 1983, Mary gave birth to Sam, and it was then that she felt that her family, her normal life, was complete. For six months things fell into a happy, almost golden rhythm of Sam's late night feedings and Dean's T-Ball games. Mary delighted in the little things that made John the perfect dad and the opposite of a hunter, like the way that he had all the time in the world to toss around a football with his oldest, the way he helped out with the boys, the way he was on hand every night to tuck the kids into bed, and most of all the two college funds. She wanted big things for her sons, a future, an education, the chance to settle down whoever they wanted and jobs that they could tell normal people about, and Mary had no reason to think that Sam and Dean wouldn't have everything they deserved. It was perfect.
November came too quickly. On the night of Sam's 6 month birthday, Mary woke up to hear the baby crying. When she saw a figure standing by his crib that she assumed at first to be John, she nearly went back to her room. She was lured to the end of the hall by a flickering light, and for a moment she remembered the hellish days as a hunter that she had put far behind her. There was a lump in her throat, but she swallowed it, reminding herself that she was safe now, that John had taken her away from all of that. She went downstairs, going to turn off the TV that she assumed her husband had left on. When she saw that John was asleep on the sofa, she ran without hesitation back upstairs. She might have put her life of fighting supernatural things behind her ten years ago, but Mary Winchester refused to let anything happen to her sons, no matter what she had to do to protect them. When she entered the nursery the second time, she found that she recognized the intruder as the Yellow Eyed Demon who granted her the deal ten short years ago, and in that instant she knew that she had done this. In granting the demon entrance to her home she was allowing him to do whatever he had done to her son. There was no time to fight, no time to argue or plead, because the time it took to let out one panicked scream she was pinned to the ceiling and felt a horrible pain go through her middle. Somehow she stayed conscious as the demon finished his business quickly and left. She watched with horror when John came into the room, willing him with all of her might to look up, to see her, to save her. John looked up and for one horrible instant Mary looked back down at him. She could see from the horror on his face that it was too late, that she couldn't be rescued from this, and yet she wanted to be, to hold her sons one more time, to see the normal lives that she had wanted so for them unfold one predictable milestone after the next.
The fire came, intensely hot and painful for just a moment and then there was nothing. The biggest surprise for Mary came when she realized that she had not moved on to some sort of afterlife, or even to nothingness. She was trapped as a ghost in her own house. It was a miserable, boring existence, keeping herself as far from human perception as she could because she knew firsthand how humans reacted to spirits, and she didn't want to harm anyone.
Many years later, though she lost count of how many, a young family moved into Mary's old house. She took a quiet sort of satisfaction in watching over them, protecting them. Unfortunately the evil that had invaded her house left scars, scars that allowed all sorts of supernatural 'infections' to set in. Mary tried the best she could to protect the family, particularly the little girl who loved in the room that had once been Sam's nursery, but the child was terrified of Mary's spirit, and it upset her.
Seeing Sam and Dean come to fix the problem was a surprise for several reasons. First of all, her sons were nearly grown, but there was something in their faces, a familiarity that a mother recognized instantly. They were, after all, her boys. She watched with horror as they nearly got killed trying to rid the house of the malevolent spirits, and nearly came forward, but she resisted. She knew that her sons would be frightened, that they would worry for her and her existence being stuck in the house, and that was the last thing she wanted. Mary hid herself from the boys until she couldn't anymore, until her youngest was all but paralyzed and the evil spirit inhabiting her house was in real danger of winning, and then she revealed herself.
It hurt her, to know that the boys would always have that memory of her as a woman on fire. She had tried to protect them from that. More than that, she wondered what they were doing in such a place, hunting after such awful things, but there was no time to ask questions, to catch up on the lives that she had missed. She had just a minute to meet each of men who were her sons and to apologize to Sam, and then she had to confront the thing that was threatening her sons and the family who were trying to make her house into a home.
Calmly, forcefully (because she knew what she was doing, that she would have the power to force this creature away) Mary told the evil spirit to leave her home. Then, hurling her spirit upward, Mary sacrificed herself. Her goodness, her self sacrifice canceled out the evilness that was threatening her sons, and then Mary knew no more.
